I've read other reviews that argue whether this is a book of loosely related short stories (like Krik Krak) or a novel (like Breath, Eyes, Memory). I say a novel, with chapters that enlighten us slowly about the title character. Some of the chapters, I'll admit, are pretty loosely linked (and I'd love to talk with people if they can see more direct connections for the GED students and one other chapter...). But overall, I think it gives us the pieces of the puzzle that is one man's place in Haitian politics/history and American culture.
