A Little Life
by Hanya Yanagihara
dark
emotional
slow-paced
I’m conflicted on how to rate this book. The writing is beautiful, but deceiving and cruel.
This starts slowly and before you know it you are attached to all of the characters. You start to get hints at Jude’s past and once you start to think you know what happened, something even more terrible is revealed. Then you have happy moments to soften the blows before being submerged in sorrow once again.
Sometimes this felt unnecessarily tragic and even brutal. And yet Jude’s character is so incredibly human that it’s also poetic and lovely.
