Kitchen (novel) and Moonlight (short story) – Banana Yoshimoto

Kitchen (3/5 I liked it)

The novel is written from the perspective of Mikage, our main character who is dealing with the loss of her remaining family. Alone in the world, she is invited to live with Yuichi and his unusual mother (who happens to be his transgendered biological father and also runs nightclub) as a temporary measure. The two become a surrogate family for her and help her move on. Mikage finds her passion in culinary arts as she moves along in the world. Her ties to the past may constrict her movement, but they also support her foothold.

For dealing with similar themes, I will say I prefer Moshi Moshi if you have to choose one or the other.

The novel is followed by a short story titled Moonlight. (4/5 I really liked it)
The theme is also grief. But in this instance, the wound is still fresh and bleeding.
Anymore and I will spoil the story. But it is really good and I recommend reading.
