The Best Australian Poems 2009 by Dorothy Porter, Robert Adamson, Mandy Beaumont, Jen Jewel Brown, Lisa Gorton, Adam Aitken, Judith Beveridge, Michelle Cahill, Ivy Alvarez
3.0

The humour, structure and rhyme I anticipated from contemporary Australian poetry was rather lacking in this collection. I was pleasantly surprised by several poems, but on the whole this book left me a little dissatisfied.

The most outstanding contributions included those from Sarah Day, Robert Gray, renowned musician Paul Kelly, Anthony Lawrence, Jenni Nixon, Geoff Page, π. O., Peter Porter, John Tranter and Meredith Wattison.

Tim Thorne's "Cimitiére Marin Revisited" and Alan Wearne's "Dysfunction, North Carlton Style or The Widow of Noosa" provided the wry humour and sense of rhythm that I sought from Australian poetry, both of which I highly recommend.
