This is a very different book from "Girl with a Pearl Earring."
This book takes place in London from 1901-1910, following the lives of two families, the COlemans and the Waterhouses. We hear numerous voices here too - adults, children, scullery maid, grave digger, doyene. Chevalier's gift here is making us care about these various people - especially Maude - who grows physically, emotionally and intellectually through the timespan of the book.
