This review is also posted on my blog Mad Scibrarian.

A Japanese steampunk dystopian with mythological creatures? That sounds pretty cool.

And yeah, I guess it was pretty cool, but it was exactly that. Nothing more and nothing less.

It is a standard dystopian story where there is an overlord, only this time it is based off the Japanese Shogun. We have the world dying due to the Blood Lotus plant, which kills the soil when grown but it is needed to fuel all the mechanical machines, our steampunk. It also features some Japanese mythological creatures due to the Shogun sending his subordinates on a quest to fetch him one. So yes, it is a Japanese steampunk dystopian with mythological creatures.

Nothing other than that stands out. The writing is okay. The plot is standard dystopian with, you know, all those elements stated above incorporated. Our heroine is a strong female heroine, but she has the similar hero’s journey that other dystopian heroines have completed before.

If it sounds interesting to you, I say go for the read, but know that it’s not anything new to the genre, other than incorporating those elements into it.

I already own the next 2 books in the trilogy due to a book-buying addiction, so I’ll be continuing the series. The reviews for the next books will let you know if it’s worth continuing, I guess.
