A really good read if you focus mainly on the relationship between Tal and Athlen. They're both lovable in their own ways and their chemistry is honestly infectious. Currently one of my favorite couples, I love the development of the relationship. Their motivations were interesting and the kind of love they have - loving each other despite and for their flaws and burdens - is one of my favorite kinds. I also loved the side characters, they have great dynamics and relationships with the main characters.

That said, some of the plot and the worldbuilding left something to be desired. The plot felt disjointed at times but was easy enough to ignore. My main issue was that the worldbuilding felt like it was building up to something larger than it ended up being. The plot of preparing to stop a war felt like it fell flat on its face, and wasn't really resolved. I'm not disappointed but it did feel like I was halfway through the plot when I was 75% through the book. I also kind of wish we got to see more of Kel and the guard, I liked their dynamic.

Overall a great book, especially if you like an overall light fantasy romance with good emotional beats. It falls flat at time and feels convenient at times with how conflicts are resolved, but it's a good standalone book. It reads a lot like fanfiction at times, not really a bad things. If you want a quick, fluffy queer read, this is def for you.
