When My Brother Was an Aztec by Natalie Díaz
4.0

Occasionally I’ll go on a spiel about how much I hate the starred rating system because it’s so emotion-driven. When I read Post-Colonial Love Poem, I thought it was five stars, but I rarely rave about it now; moreover, I think I like this book better yet chose to rate it four stars. I thought that the poetry was better, but I thought that it could’ve structurally been compiled better. Of course, with poetry collections there are sections that one prefers more than others, & that was the case for me with this book. I thought that her commentary & lyricism was provocative, & it was a satiating collection of poetry. I also learned that Natalie Díaz is an iconic writer in terms of her biography. I highly recommend you check out this work & her other poetry.
