Gone with the Wind
by Margaret Mitchell
I can't give this a star rating, it's an impossible task.
On one hand, the writing was so evocative and just genuinely beautiful at so many times. The chapters where they escape Atlanta were just so good. The characters were all so fleshed out (for who/what they are) and the way Scarlett interacted with each of them was fun to read. I loved all the parts with Rhett. The "my dear, I don't give a damn" line was INCREDIBLE. Apparently I'm one of the few who had no context for it and it was not at all what I was expecting and it was great.
On the other hand, Scarlett is deplorable. Really, everyone is just awful. The content, the attitudes, the perspective, all just so hard to read through the lens of today. It was also painful to read Scarlett's thoughts and attitudes, she was such a brat and an idiot over and over.
But I couldn't stop reading. I think I almost rage read this honestly. It was so problematic but my gosh, was it well written.
