Boys in the Valley by Philip Fracassi

4.0

I don't read a lot of horror and I wasn't sure what to expect here, but this sounded like a great read for this time of year ... and the atmosphere in this one was dark & creepy for sure. The story about boys in a Christian orphanage started out unassuming and slow, but then things ramped up, and got horrifying & intense fast. The tension was palpable, I got really scared for some of the boys.

There were quite a few characters and perspectives, but they were very distinct and easy to tell apart, all struggling with their own demons and traumas. Despite all the darkness, however, a glimmer of hope prevailed throughout. I loved the ending and liked that this story had its warm & tender moments as well. I might pick up more from this author in the future.
