Heroes: A Novel of Pearl Harbor by Alan Gratz

3.0

Young readers, especially young boys, would probably love this book. It is a great way to learn history in a fun way.

The gist of the book is this. Two 14-year-old boys obsessed with comic books and writing and drawing comic books live on Ford Island and visit the US, Utah, with just their sister's boyfriend (stationed on the ship) when the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor.

I am not the target audience and have only read one or two comic books in my life, so the comic book references did not grab me. The bombing of Pearl Harbor was over in a few hours, so all the adventures and places the boys had were unbelievable, but the book did weave a lot of what was happening to different people that day.
I was on a road trip and realized I would be done with my current book before I arrived. I just grabbed something Hoopla recommended as I was leaving the hotel. Had I read more, I probably would not have chosen the book. However, the book did keep me entertained and ended just as I arrived at the location, so it worked well.
