The Boyfriend
by Freida McFadden
My first read from Freida McFadden, and it 100% lived up to the hype! This is the fastest I have ever finished a book. Picked it up in the evening, went to sleep, finished it in the morning. A total of 6 hours.
The plot was absolutely wild in the best possible way. McFadden’s writing is so engaging that even the slower moments had me hooked, knowing that something shocking was just around the corner.
I will say though, while the relationships in the story were eerie and fascinating, Sydney is absolutely insufferable! She knows from the start that her new sweetheart could be the one who was dating Bonnie, but she seems to forget about it all, and later comes back to the same revelations. Her internal conflict and the way she deals with her emotions and relationships felt real though, we've all been there!
The book explores themes of control, manipulation, and trust. There’s a deep psychological tension throughout the story, and it kept me thinking long after I had finished. The pacing was spot-on, with just the right balance between tension and revelations that made the entire book feel like a rollercoaster ride. And the ending? It was the perfect conclusion to such an intense and thrilling book. McFadden definitely had me thinking Randy was the killer, it was only when Tom had flashbacks to a body laying on the floor did I realise that it was Daisy who had killed Slug, and not the other way around.
If you love psychological thrillers that keep you on your toes and characters that get under your skin, then Boyfriend is an absolute must-read. I can't wait to pick up another book from her, I've already got Never Lie lined up!
