This is a very long picture book--very text heavy. The illustrations reminded me of Sophie Blackall--they have a similar artistic styles. In my brain, this would fit in the picture book version of literary fiction genre--it is slower paced than many kids will give space for, but for those who will eventually grow into the Penderwicks series, this is a book they should check out!
