Wild Magic by Madeline Freeman
4.0

Ok, so, I've sat on this review for a few days, unsure what rating to give.

Wild Magic is the second in the Clearwater Witches series (trilogy?) and, having loved Crystal Magic, I'd been rather excited for this one.

In a sense, it didn't disappoint -it was a very enjoyable read; great catching up with Krissa and the gang, discovering just how much life in Clearwater has been screwed up (/improved) by the time travel spell, figuring out what exactly this crystal is all about. Freeman has created an extremely interesting world, an exciting story, with characters I quickly came to care about.

But...BUT...

This book is not without its issues. Issues that have acted as automatic mark down points for me with many a book in the past. Pretty major no-no's I can't rate and review without acknowledging:

1. Love triangle.
2. Clumsy foreshadowing.
3. A protagonist who comes across as kinda wet, who was annoyingly indecisive, passive, and blind to the obvious.
4. Repetition of plot info every other page. Like readers are too dumb to follow without the constant reminders.
5. An ending I just could not buy into much at all.

So, yeah...

Rating: Not easy.

My thought while reading was 5*. However, on finishing and reflecting, weighing up, I've been swaying between 3* and 4*. 2* was even briefly considered.

4* is where I've decided to settle.

Because, well, I can't deny I found it quite the page turner. I am looking forward to picking up the next book, I'm rooting for Krissa and want to see things turn out okay for her. Clearwater's a place I do really like spending time in, and -stripping it back to basics -I figure that's the most important thing.
