A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair

Addicting!

Persephone is the Goddess of Spring, and nobody knows. Her mother, Demeter, the Goddess Of Harvest, has kept her hidden and imprisoned for most of her life, “for her own good”. But Persephone dreams of freedom and adventure, and has convinced Demeter to allow her to live as a mortal for a time, working and going to college.

One night Persephone and her roommate, Lexa, go to a night club, Nevernight. A darkly beautiful man offers to teach Persephone how to play poker, and she somehow ends up in a contract with him…as he is Hades, and Hades is renowned for his contracts. She must create life in the Underworld within 6 months, or she must live there for all eternity. Horrified and feeling manipulated, she starts researching how to grow a garden the mortal way. For she may be the Goddess Of Spring, but any flora she touches wilts and dies.

Oh my gods I am hooked! I absolutely loved the dynamic between Hades and Persephone! He is so misunderstood but never makes any moves to show the mortal world that he is actually a good God. A just, compassionate, and caring God. And Persephone is a victim of her mother’s manipulation, but also her own fears. Watching (reading about) her find herself and come into her own powers was inspiring, although she did have some frustrating moments second-guessing everything and doubting Hades when he’d never given her reason to. But Hades too had some frustrating moments, not explaining himself, letting Persephone believe the worst without much argument.

All in all I absolutely loved the book. The pacing was good, there was a great mix of characters to love and hate, the angst was ever-present, and it was HOT!!! I’ll be starting book two immediately!
