Growing Pangs by Kathryn Ormsbee

4.0

Sometimes I just need a good middle grade book. This graphic novel was a reminder of why kids need books about all sorts of people and all sorts of stories.

Katie is a sixth grade homeschooler worried about friendships, braces, and trying to stay connected to her older sister. When her anxiety becomes overwhelming, she starts believing that if she taps her chin 5 times or turns the faucet on and off exactly 10 times that all will be well.

Katie’s struggle with OCD is real and makes her feel all tangled up. The book ends with hope as Katie begins to talk to a therapist, finding help and understanding. I loved the author’s note at the end where she explains her own journey with OCD and talks to the reader like a good friend.
