It's been a while since a book made me as angry as this one did. In terms of plot, it's pretty run-of-the-mill for fantasy, with fairly one-dimensional side characters and an unlikable main character. But the thing that dropped this from three stars to one has to be hidden behind a spoiler tag.

The only two developed gay characters in the story die. Their deaths serve no purpose other than shock value and to up the stakes for the straight main character.

I almost didn't finish this book, and it's not one I'll be keeping on my shelves.
