The Power
by Naomi Alderman
Imagine a world where females have all the power. Young females have found the physical ability to conduct electrical currents with their hands, which can cause a great shock. If not controlled, the shock can be fatal. The young women show elder women how to awaken “the power” in their own hands. First, videos break out on the internet and the media blames it on a mystery virus or witchcraft; the phenomenon is first dismissed as a temporary problem. Quickly, the new-found power travels across the globe and females become the dominant gender. Men are living scared. Men need a female guardian to travel about. Young boys are segregated into male only schools for their own protection. The world has changed drastically. Naomi Alderman’s brilliant handling of how this scenario might play out in our modern world with social media was not farfetched. This book has depth on many levels touching on social, political, gender issues, and more. Stay tuned for this to become the next Hand-Maid’s Tale comparable acclaimed series. It’s no wonder Margaret Atwood provided a blurb on the cover, as there are many similarities in the two dystopian societies, only Alderman flips the dominant gender. An interesting dystopian science-fiction read that you will hear more about! - Lisanne E.
