Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
4.25

Maybe 4.5⭐️…
This was so good! Wasn’t sure what to expect from YA since it’s been a while. The magic system in this book is so interesting, and the book explores a lot of really important themes.

(More) Positives:
1. Interesting and complex magic system - I enjoyed the Arthurian legend magic and the Rootcraft, and I am excited to learn more about how it works!
2. Characters - love Sel especially, and Bree, Alice, William, Nick… and I think there has been lots of room left for them to develop more :)
3. The ending - lots of surprises!
4. Majority of the time, especially at the start and the end, I really enjoyed the writing
5. Good amount going on in the plot - although some things were a bit rushed in the middle, while it also somehow felt like not much was happening then

Negatives:
1. Timings - I think the events of the book take place over wayyyy too short a time period, it doesn’t really make sense how Bree does everything she does in the time, to the point where I just chose to ignore the timescales haha. This also meant that relationships between characters developed too quickly in my opinion (minor spoiler: this is possibly slightly explained at the end)
2. I love the campus setting, but WHEN is Bree going to classes / getting her work done??!! This needed to be more realistic and I feel like it could have been incorporated effectively into the story
3.
Why does Bree’s grandma appear to her as an old woman, when she died young?? Doesn’t make sense, feels like a mistake (I hope I’m wrong and there’s a reason).

4.
I feel like Abatement is too extreme - I don’t understand why anyone would want to be a Squire when that’s the price??! Maybe I’ve misunderstood it, in which case it wasn’t explained very well in the book haha.
