The Sons Of Mil: The Innisfail Cycle: Book One by L.M. Riviere, D. Lea

adventurous dark funny mysterious fast-paced

3.5/5

I'm absolutely delighted to read an epic based on Ireland's mythology, and not to see it completely bastardised.

There's so much that's great about the Sons of Mil. The author does a great job with the lore and setting up a sort of mystery as to who wants UnĂ¡ dead and why.

I really did enjoy the book.

However, there's a few points that brought the rating down. One is that I don't think a reader from outside Ireland will have the easiest time picturing where everything is. I'm from here and a lot of the towns and places were sort of names in an amorphous blob. I really think a map would have helped (and not just because I love fantasy maps). I'd have loved to see a map of Ireland with the different place names and boundaries.

There's a romance that comes completely out of no where. There was a line 'He's in love' and I said outloud 'uh.. is he?'. They have no chemistry, or really that much interaction in the grand scheme of things. One day we are just told they're in love. I don't feel it.

I received an arc copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
