Cute concept

There's definitely a lot to like about this one: a focus on animals, likeable characters, a world being built, nods to troupes and cliches, a definite feel of real world, current day issues.

One problem for me was the pace. The author did really well building up the tension, but the end careened a bit out of control for me. More details of the main characters' personalities--showing, not telling--would've helped, I think.

My main issue (and this is very much a "me" thing) is that I don't like when people not from Cascadia set books there. The descriptions feel off and people don't behave as they would in that setting (umbrellas and pashminas? no. diners with baristas? separate entities.) and it really pulls me out of the characters' world.

Overall though this one made me smile and I look forward to returning to Ephron.
