Deadlocked
by Charlaine Harris
There's not much to say about Sookie Stackhouse that hasn't been said before. She's still reading minds, still working at a bar, still dating supes, still making bad choices. Deadlocked had a promising start, but in the end, it just fell flat. The antagonist didn't feel very antagonistic. The drama wasn't particularly dramatic. And the major "betrayal"? Sookie didn't even seem that put out by it. In this edition we find ourselves approaching the twilight of Eric and Sookie's relationship. Yet for a relationship whose hallmark is heat, I found it's demise a bit lukewarm. Lukewarm. That seems to be the tone of this book.
Don't get me wrong, I was entertained. And that's important. But at this point, I'm not reading these books because I care about the characters or because I'm particularly compelled by the intricacies of the plot. I'm reading 1) because this is the 2nd to last book in the series and I have to know how this whole thing ends (I've invested a lot of time in the residents of Bon Temps, LA), and 2) because these books are quick reads. And when you're reading 52 books a year, you'll take all the quick ones you can get.
I can't imagine what else Sookie could possibly get up to next. There've been wars, she's been kidnapped and tortured. She's dated all manner of supernatural creatures. She's committed and witnessed so many crimes, I've lost count. Whatever it is, I hope it's enough to provide a fitting send off for an all around entertaining cast of characters.
