The Reluctant Queen
by Sarah Beth Durst
Actual rating: 3,5 stars
The Queens of Renthia continues to surprise me with this second book. Like the first book, this sequel is a refreshing YA that doesn’t follow the other overused tropes of the genre and even introduces an adult main character, mother of two children. This new POV takes the series on a more mature path, and I really enjoyed it.
Unlike The Queen of Blood, however, I found this one a bit too slow. The tension is there, but I wish we had a bit more action to keep me captivated from start to finish. As for the end, it was very unexpected for me even if looking back now, it was pretty obvious. And as for the villain, I found their motivations understandable, but it’s still not enough for me to understand why they acted the way they did. Hopefully, the third and final book will provide all the answers I need.
On the bright side, I loved how the world expands and reveals more of its secrets. The characters all felt well developed, and I’m really intrigued to see where the story will take us and end in The Queen of Sorrow.
