Treasure of the Abyss by Tiffany Roberts

I'll admit it: I started reading this book because I was in the mood for some immediate alien smut and I'm not ashamed of that at all. But to my surprise, this book was more fleshed out and intricate than I was expecting. A+ for that.

We have our two main people: Jax and Macy (I'll never take this name seriously because of the department store and I'm really sorry for that). I loved that their love was slow to build. Curiosity and deep connection were at the heart of their relationship. I couldn't appreciate this more, tbh. No instalust or instalove. No Mary Sue-isms or overwhelmingly protective Alpha male trope. Yes, Jax turned out to be a little more Alpha than I was expecting as the story progressed and utilized the words "mine" and "mate" intermittently, but I didn't mind it. It was just the right balance. Jax and Macy's relationship was genuine, heartfelt, and smooth. They were both mature characters that used their brain to make good decisions, and they communicated pretty well. I was very satisfied with the romance. Not to mention the smut... Holy hell, was I sweating. (Don't judge me. Alien men and tentacles are one of my very guilty pleasures. I can't be alone in this depravity.)

The plot and story were well written. I didn't struggle to imagine the characters. The worldbuilding was a little lackluster, but it's book 1 in a 7 book series, so I'm sure their world will be explained as we progress. The secondary characters were solid. The climax was directed well.

My only gripe is babies. I don't like it when one of the main characters gets pregnant suddenly. I understand that the kraken species has difficulty procreating, and finding out that Macy's pregnant is a blessing for their kind, but half alien babies are worse for me than regular babies and it's not my thing. Minor, but it's my truth. It's why I've avoided Ruby Dixon's books to a certain extent even though I like her several alien book series.

Would I reread this? No, but it's a solid alien romance if you're in the mood for aliens with tentacles. Just throwing that out there now.
Would I recommend this book? Yes, read above statement.
Was I entertained? Yes, more than I expected to be and that was a very pleasant surprise.

Indulge in guilty pleasures, Goodreads fiends.
