The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida
by Shehan Karunatilaka
It’s mostly fine. It’s pretty incoherent at times but it did motivate me to learn more about Sri Lanka which is the best thing about it in my opinion. This book works pretty well as a drama about three best friends, far less well as a political thriller. The usual trope of a ghost investigating the cause of their own death is just too exhausted to hold much interest and it’s tedious when he tries to use it it as his access point to political and wartime insights.
Next up off the shelf is Fitzsimmons’ “Constance” which also about a ghost investigating their death. This story is inescapable.
