The Hunted One by Brittney Sahin
4.0
Spice: 1/5
Plot: 3.5/5
Now before I say anything else I’m going to get this out there… Meredith, THIS IS NOT A BAD REVIEW!!! I just really need to make sure I start with that lol.
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times (ok maybe not actually a thousand but y’all should know by now) that insta love is NOT one of my preferred tropes. There are a couple exceptions to that rule, and I feel like it has to meet very specific criteria for me to be ok with it. Unfortunately, this book didn’t mean said criteria lol. There is a *minor spoiler* warning, but it just has to do with why I didn’t like the insta love in this one.
However! I really, really like the world that Brittney is building here and I really like the characters as well. So I’ll break this down for you guys… This series is all about men who are former special ops, military, navy, CIA, etc, who now work in private security. You can tell that Brittney really does her research because it felt like I was watching an episode of Seal Team or NCIS or something like that, which I fucking LOVE! NCIS Los Angeles is actually one of my favourite shows of all time, but I’ve never read a book that gave me those vibes before, so this was really refreshing for me! All of the men are MEN and I am here for it lol. My immediate favourite from the group is Jesse and right from the get go I messaged Meredith going, “oh I like HIM!” I also really liked how we got to learn little bits here and there about all of the other guys and it definitely got me interested enough to want to continue the series and find out what happens with everyone!
So things I wasn’t a huge fan of… obviously the tropes lol. If insta love is your thing, you’re gunna love this lol. I think it bothered me so much in this regard because she’s a widow and makes a point of always saying how much she misses her husband and he’s a really big focal point for a large chunk of the book but then she’s letting this guy finger bang her within 24 hours of meeting him…. Yeaaa, that just doesn’t work in my mind. Like, at all. The other thing I struggled with is that it is third person POV. Now I’m not one of those people who hates third person, I really don’t mind it if it’s done well but in this instance it can be a bit confusing. It jumps from one person to another very quickly with zero notice so it’s a little hard to keep track of who is being talked about at certain times. Now the last one isn’t necessarily negative, it’s just a lot to process and that’s how interconnected her series are. I absolutely love when an author is able to connect one series to another. It’s like when NCIS would do a cross over with Hawaii Five-0, I’d go feral for that shit lol. So that definitely happens here, but because Falcon Falls is a newer series, there’s A LOT of other characters and ops that I haven’t read about yet so it was hard to keep track of. BUT, I discovered at the end of the book that Brittney has a section called ‘Crossover Info’ where she breaks down the side characters and gives us the whole, who what when where why and how and it’s really helpful! It’s also insane and seriously impressive how interconnected she’s made everything, like standing ovation impressive cuz there’s no way I could keep all that shit straight lol. It also really makes me want to go back and read these earlier series just so I can know everyone else’s stories.
Other notable things, the spice is decent but it’s pretty light. Couple super cliche moments that I thought were cheesy as all hell but definitely not deal breakers lol. Couple really good moments where I was like “oooh shiiit, okaaaay!” lol. Honestly overall, it was a McChicken. It was good and I definitely needed it in that moment but I think the rest of the series will be even better! So yes, I would recommend reading this, if only to get you to the next books in the series lol.
And thank you Meredith for introducing me to this author and this series in particular!! I’ve definitely been missing this kind of world and I’m really looking forward to reading about Jesse next!
