I honestly don't know what to rate this book or how I even feel about it. On one hand I feel like I've just finished one of the greatest book series I've ever read. On the other hand I think I might just detest that I even read it.

In general I think the first mistborn trilogy is one of the best book series I've ever read. Brandon Sanderson is a fantastic writer and everything he did with the world building, the magic system and the little breadcrumbs here and there that in the end came together to reveal the truth to the reader needs to be commended. The hero of ages was a good book, but I just found the ending so completely devastating and unsatisfying that it kind of spoiled the whole book series for me. Nothing wrong with the book, but I honestly would've hoped for a different ending. While I would love to give this book 5 stars based on Brandon Sanderson's use of subtle foreshadowing and amazing world building, I simply cannot. There was a slow spot in the middle of the book that dragged a bit and was slow compared to the rest of the book. Of course I understand that it was a crucial part of setting everything up, but it did make me struggle to get through the "uninteresting" bits. This alone isn't why I feel the book doesn't deserve 5 stars, but combined with the unsatisfying end that just left me feeling a bit empty is why I can't honestly rate it as high as I would like. Brandon Sanderson as a writer though deserves all the stars in the world and I can't wait to read more of his books.
