Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson
5.0

You know what's NOT sexy? Your boyfriend coming home to a blubbering mess: tissues all over the floor, eyes red rimmed, face all splotchy, snot and tears streaking your face and wheezing like oxygen is going out of style. This is what happens the last few chapters of this book so WARNING: Don't invite your boy/girlfriend over towards the end of this book unless you're sure they can handle it. Also, try not to read it in public or at work. Like I said, it ain't cute.

This is an excellent tear jerker with so much love and heart... I went into this book not expecting much and quickly groaned... cancer stories are never my thing. But this time it was different. Instead of the main character, it's her father who is diagnosed. The entire family go back to their summer home for the first time in 5 years and have their last family summer vacation.

Even when there are moments of happiness, there is an underlying, inherent sadness to this book. Even as relationships are repaired and recreated and new ones takes place there is a contrast to the father's slow deterioration , both physical and mental. The only thing I didn't like was Taylor's freak out and subsequent reaction towards Henry but by the end of the book, I was OK with it because of Taylor's growth and maturation of character.

I'd give it a solid 5 stars.
