The Country Girls by Edna O'Brien

3.0

This book was assigned for class but I also watched a documentary about Edna O’Brien by the BBC which is available on YouTube. It was interesting seeing how much of her own life that Edna put into this novel, but truthfully I preferred learning about her to reading this book.
I didn’t like any of the characters much and was particularly irked by Baba especially with how she treated Cait (the note! The NOTE!! That was so so selfish of her). I was relieved at the ending I have to say as I thought it was going somewhere I didn’t want it to, especially knowing how influenced by O’Brien’s life it was. Definitely a much easier read than The Dark but with many of the same themes, just with a little less bleakness and a bit more fun.
I appreciate how groundbreaking it was at the time and it was an enjoyable enough read but I’m unlikely to finish the trilogy. I liked O’Brien’s style though and may have a look at some of her more recent novels.
