Whispers and the Roars
by K. Webster
I going to say, though the author recommends going into this blind, I really really wish I’d had a better synopsis of the shape of it and the actual plot happening - both for triggers, and understanding the details of what I was reading. And that the author kept asking us not to leave detailed reviews left a bad taste in my mouth - those of us who seek them out do so for any number of reasons, but ALL being that we need those details. Readers who don’t want to be spoiled aren’t the ones looking for triggers or synopsis details and there was an icky amount of judgment in K’s parting author’s note about that I cannot condone. This is the review I wish I’d have had going into this, spoilers and all
You’ve been warned, though the most blatant ones regarding major plot twists are under spoiler bars as a courtesy.
I don’t love stories that unfold with narrative mysteries and this one, where instead ofmultiple characters you have one character with nine multiple personalities was hard to swallow without that context. The absolutely horrible child abuse, molestation, spousal abuse, and self harm also really could have done with noted and visible triggers for *me*.
That said, this unconventional soul mate love story was beautiful. It just wasn’t something I think a mood reader like me could pick up or should pick up without MUCH more context and spoilers, for my own mental health.
Yeo is a fantastic boyfriend. Absolutely god tier level dedicated to his girl even with her own unique challenges and painful past. Kady and the fam are quirky and sweet and then bittersweet, and Kush was a delight while also being incisive and truly helpful for Kady in a way Yeo couldn’t be.
So many good things about this unusual romance - but understanding from the drop that this story is about aterribly abused young woman with multiple personality disorder from coping with that trauma and the boyfriend she drove off was actually in regular contact with her the entire time he went to med school to try and understand her, and love her, better? That would have been very very useful for me enjoying the first half of this book.
