creepy and full of atmosphere. Told in the style of Brian Selznick, where two stories are told in alternating chapters, one in prose, and one in drawings. Two young girls, both very sad and lonely, live very close to each other, but are separated by time. Mary Baines, an orphan who lives in Thornhill in 1982 is selectively mute - and is tormented by a bully in her group home. She has been failed by the adults in her life who have done nothing to stop the abuse. Ella is a young girl, whose father basically leaves her unattended. Not sure if mom and dad are divorced, or mom is dead. Ella appears to have no friends.
Not sure how I felt about the ending - yes, they found friendship in each other, but both girls end up dead. Not a winning scenario in my book! Also, they appear to be luring in a young boy in one of the last panels - a little disquieting to me.
The graphic portions are well done, and truly capture the spirit of the novel, bringing that "gothic" feel to the pages.
