Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney
3.0

I liked this book. And you can tell because I read it in 19 days. It was interesting and I’ve recently visited Dublin which made me more interested, being aware of the setting.

The four main characters all led completely different lives to me, none of which I’d necessarily think, ‘yep, that’s what I want to do as well,’ but they definitely interested me in a strange way. I found all four of them - Frances, Bobbi, Melissa and Nick - to be awful, selfish individuals. But I suppose we all are in a way.

I did find Frances in particular to be very naive and dramatic, which annoyed me at times. But I kept reading because I was drawn to see what she did next.

I liked the way Sally’s writing is very direct and to the point, without much waffle and overused, unneeded description. I find that tedious. She left a lot to my imagination, which I liked. And in a way I really enjoyed the way she wrote everything, if that makes sense. It made me feel a bit intelligent (is that sad? Probably.)

It definitely opened my eyes to how other people live and how different people see things. It also helped me to understand why some people behave the way they do, and how they think about certain things.

I did enjoy this book a lot. I was just a bit frustrated at the situation with Nick and Frances (I don’t want to leave a spoiler) particularly at the end. But I couldn’t stop reading! I’m so sleep deprived because I enjoyed this so much. Wow, I’ve probably said that a lot, haven’t I?
