ollylloydjones 's review for:
Prisoners of Geography
by Tim Marshall
4.5 - Utterly fascinating.
This small, delightfully readable book is packed with interesting facts. I lost count of the number of times I said out loud 'of course!' or 'I never thought of that!'.
Taking a geopolitical look at current world events it explains things like why Crimea is so important to Russia (The Black Sea is Russia's only warm water port), why USA got the jackpot in terms of the geographical lottery (the USA has more navigable rivers than the rest of the world combined!!!) and lots, lots more.
It makes decisions like Trump's election, Brexit and the (what sadly seems) imminent crumbling of the EU very worrisome indeed.
It's true that Marshall seems to know some areas better than others (the chapters on Russia, USA and China are superb), and it would have been nicer for more detail in other areas of the world. However, this is an overview and the bibliography at the back of the book contains lots of further reading.
Highly recommended.
