Suspense with some romance
I love the realness when it comes to the relationships in this series. The suspense is great. It is very dark and graphic content though. I do not mind it but it might be too much for many people so be warned before picking up this or Grant County series of books. They are dark and not even all the relationships are great or happy or bright parts of the books, though sometimes there are some bright spots.
Though the case is not a carryover and even some of the relationships are written in a way that you don't neccessarily need the background from previous books it does help to have read the series in order to understand the connections and the journey these characters have been on in their lives. It is probably very obvious for many who the bad guy is from the beginning, there is just some things that stand out but "everyone is a suspect". There's many times that it makes you think, did I even meet the bad guy? Is it one of these guys? Nooo it cant be? can it?... it was great and I liked the suspense and thought about that. I also appreciate some of the focus being on the aftermath of crimes and the effect it can have on detectives, victims and their family.
