So, the American Wife of the title is superficially Laura Bush, and metaphorically the American people. I still had a hard time understanding that wife's (either us or Laura's) attraction to the obnoxious bastard that was our president. The book started out strong, finished strong, at times went on too long --I was often startled that we were still on a day that had begun chapters earlier. Still, all in all, a hell of a book.
