Miracle by Danielle Steel
2.0

This was a pretty basic romance novel. Boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, girl falls in love with boy, internal conflict means they can never be together, they get back together, they live happily ever after. This time, on a boat.

That being said, there wasn't much I liked about it. The main character, Quinn, was a bad husband, father, and a pretty crappy person most of the time. And after his wife died, he decided to punish himself for the rest of his life for it.

But - wait for it - Maggie, his newly-divorced and going-through-hard-times neighbor, saved him with love. (It says that. He was saved by love.)

There was nothing particularly gratifying about the writing, either. It was in omniscient third person, a POV I haven't read much of. And it was ridiculously repetitive. The same things, over, and over, and over.

I love her but I can't be with her, I have to punish myself for my failures, I don't deserve to love her, I can't be with her, I have to leave on my new boat, I deserve to be alone, she deserves a better life than I can give her, blah, blah, self pity, blah.

I love him but I have to let him go, this is the life he wants, he wants to be alone, he thinks he deserves to be alone, I have to give him his freedom, I can get by without him, I'll have to because he's leaving, when he leaves I won't stop him, he needs to leave, blah, blah.

I understood the first hundred times. It really didn't need to be on every page.

I gave it two stars instead of one because it was a light read, something I could flip through lazily on breaks at work without losing track of what was happening. So 2/5. Would not recommend.

Normally I'd say that I won't be picking up another one of Danielle Steel's novels but, unfortunately, I'm under obligation to read at least two more. Ah well.
