The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
3.0

A student recommended this book to me as I wanted to read more literature from India. I really appreciate what Divakaruni tried to do by rewriting the Mahabharata from Draupadi's perspective, and I really liked learning more about this ancient, epic poem. However, I found the first-person voice awkward and preachy at times, so that Draupadi's character felt overall a bit shallow. I wonder if Divakaruni din't try too hard to stick to the source material, so that her heroine feels less fleshed out than she might otherwise have been. Great intent, but the strong feminist heroine that she sets up just never came to fruition for me.
