Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul by John Eldredge, Stacy Eldredge
2.0
informative reflective medium-paced

solid 2.

I can't remember where I saw this (probably pinterest) but I was curious and read this with an open mind.

Positives: I definitely think society and specifically women does need to heal it's relationship with the "feminine" and that definitely is the aim of this book. I thought it was surprisingly considerate and non-judgmental of women's pain and experiences. I really enjoyed Chapters 1-3 (how we define the feminine, our relationship to etc etc) and the Chapter on women as mothers, daughters. and sisters that gave me a lot of perspective as a daughter and as a woman who has the ability to "mother" others. I do think goal of the book is noble: to help women see through the lies they hear about themselves that distort their self-image and impact their relationships and how they navigate the world.

negatives: childish and cultural definition of femininity. they discuss how culture impacts how people/society understand and interact with women and Stasi even talks about how her father's understanding of his role in her family as a child was impacted by the time period but then wouldn't that be the same for how to define feminine, Stasi? way too much about a performative juvenile definition of what is feminine which I think really really detract the message in my opinion. This also reads exactly like an early 2000s self-help book speaking more to the culture than to the spirit (I physically cringed when they called God a 'lover') which added to the juvenile vibe of the book. The book feels more like a condescending pat on the head than anything that is meant to be truly transformative.
