Winter in Wartime by Jan Terlouw

4.0

“There are horrors in every war...every nation has brutally murdered and tortured in times of war, in ways that would seem unimaginable in peacetime. So don’t be fooled, Michiel, by the romance of war, heroism, sacrifice, excitement, adventure. War means injuries, grief, torture, imprisonment, hunger, hardship, injustice. There’s nothing romantic about it.”
.
Winter in Wartime is a captivating and inspiring adventure story based on the author’s own experiences as a child in Holland.
.
It’s set during the Second World War, when the Netherlands was occupied by the Nazis, and it focuses on a particularly harsh, devastating winter when due to scarcity of food, many people had to boil tulip bulbs for consumption.
.
When teenage Michiel is asked to help a wounded British spitfire pilot, he risks all in joining the resistance against the Nazis. It’s a well written novel about courage, empathy and resilience in the face of danger, and is a great lesson and reminder not to be complacent about freedom, peace and privileges. It is a young adult book, but I think it has universal appeal for its charm, humour and twisty plot.
