John Dies at the End
by David Wong
II had hoped for a madcap supernatural mystery (a bit like Dirk Gentley perhaps?), but got a surrealist horror with minimal plot and character that I couldn’t even finish. What’s worse, it is the “bro”-iest story imaginable: two young losers running around doing dumb stuff when they aren’t playing video games or going to parties with their crappy band. The only “women” in the first half are monsters, the narrator’s cardboard love interest (sex interest, really), a developmentally disabled kid, and a dog. Only the dog has any real character development.
