Little Miss Perfect and Fluffy by Julia Kent

Romantic Comedy. Little Miss Perfect is the prequel to Fluffy but is not necessary to read first, though I recommend it.

I started the audiobook of Fluffy by Julia Kent and was cracking up right from the beginning. But as I was telling everyone about it, I noticed there was a prequel, so I stopped Fluffy and began Little Miss Perfect (Free). Though it is not necessary to read first, I think it gives you some background on the characters in Fluffy that will change the way you read it from the beginning.

Little Miss Perfect takes place 10 years before Fluffy when Will and Mallory are in high school competing for the valedictorian spot. Mallory had always crushed on Will, but this was the first time the nerdy girl ever had any real connection to the popular boy. The whole story took place in one scene but it gave a good background on who the characters were and it was adorably funny.

Ten years later, in Fluffy, Mallory is still holding a grudge against Will because he weaseled his way to the valedictorian spot that belonged to her. She has been laid off of her job as a house stager and she is desperate for a job.

WANTED: Professional fluffer for set. Experience required (no amateurs)! North Shore area.

Mallory is ridiculously naive and flighty (She was valedictorian? And she is a ditz that stages houses?) Since Fluffer is an old term that means staging, she thought that it was a staging job, not knowing that a Fluffer works on a porn set “fluffing” the guys’ junk to get them ready for camera. So her response to the ad was HYSTERICAL because everything she said completely worked for the application for the porn job, but she had no clue, not even when she arrived at the house, thinking it was a set for a cooking show.

"I can't arrange that!"
"Why not?"
"It doesn't fit any of my color palettes!"

The whole scene was so funny I was giggling out loud and I know the people in the cars next to me thought I was a crazy lady cracking up alone in the car. So here she is at the porn set when the police and her high school crush come in and find her in a position that can easily be misinterpreted. They were shooting porn in Will’s family’s house illegally, and she is right there in the middle of it, arranging furniture. LOL, I am giggling again thinking of the scene!

Mallory has some major self-esteem issues despite being crazy smart, and that’s a big part of the book. She is a little bigger than most girls and would never think a guy like Will would look at her. Add to that a high school reunion and her insecurities are really brought to the forefront. She still sees herself as she did 10 years ago. She also has a group of crazy friends, and I can’t wait to get Perky’s story. I loved how Perky brought out the fun in Mal.

I honestly enjoyed every second of Fluffy, and it’s for sure on my list of audiobooks to re-listen to.

Likes:

•I laughed out loud a LOT throughout the whole book.

•A great group of friends.

•Clever and different.

•Her naivete was so much fun.

•Lots of one-liners. It feels like I should say it was over the top funny, but that was OK with me, I loved the ridiculousness of it all.

•Good set up for Perky’s book.

•Her insecurities really spoke to me.

Dislikes:

•I wish she wasn’t supposed to have been so smart because nothing she said or did backed that up. She went to Brown instead of Harvard and is an out-of-work house stager, way to not live up to your potential.

The Narration:

Erin Mallon was perfect for this! Her timing and delivery took an already fun book to a great time all around. I loved it and think that her narration made it even funnier.

The Down & Dirty:

I loved Fluffy by Julia Kent, and its prequel, Little Miss Perfect. I don’t often laugh out loud from reading, but I love books that can coax real giggles from me. Mallory was such a ditsy smart girl and Will was pretty swoony himself. Mallory's innocent naivete was a little much, but that's OK in a romcom, and it never really felt too over-the-top or like it was trying too hard. Perky is the wild best friend that all the sweet innocents have, and I can't wait for her story next. Fluffy had a fresh and fun meet-cute, and though it was light on drama and angst, it was a whole lot of silly fun.
