Cinderella Is Dead
by Kalynn Bayron
3.5 stars rounded up. This is a fantastic premise that unfortunately doesn't stick the landing in terms of execution. I mean, a Cinderella retelling centering on a sapphic heroine of color?! Give it to me! The patriarchal world is set up with this wonderful feeling of dread, but after those initial chapters the worldbuilding petered out and I found myself wanting to know more. The plot also felt loosely put together and there were definitely some plot holes that could have used some more work. Main character Sophia is richly drawn, but that made the other secondary characters feel a bit two dimensional by comparison. I’m glad that I read this book but I doubt it will be a re-read for me.
