Overall decent book. I've just read a lot of books like this, and this one wasn't really very different. At this point I feel like it's a subgenre of realistic fiction, along with "dead parent" and "mystery infused into realistic fiction." The characters were pretty good, though Brian and Teddy both looked and sounded similar in my head when I was reading them.

I'd recommend if you're tired of immersive fantasy and want something slightly generic.
