Ten Things We Did (and Probably Shouldn't Have)
by Sarah Mlynowski
April's parents are divorced. Her mom took April's younger brother and moved to Paris, so April moved in with her dad and Penny (his gf/wife). Things are okay until Dad and Penny announce that they are moving to Cleveland and April will have to leave her school, her friends, and her boyfriend in the middle of her junior year of high school. She finds the perfect solution: to move in with her friend Vi and Vi's mom, Suzanne. The hitch? Suzanne has accepted a role in a traveling theater show and won't actually be at home with the girls. Obviously April's dad cannot find this out or the plan will be vetoed.
The rest of the story is consumed with April and Vi's total lack of responsibility, April's plan to have sex with her long-term boyfriend, a hot tub, and lots of alcohol. There aren't any graphic sexual details, but lots of references to it - as well as consequences though when a character gets an STD. Lots of under-age drinking, lots of lying to parents.
Girls will like it better than boys. It's a fun read but as a grown-up my skepticism was high throughout that they could really do all this stuff and get away with it.
