Dauntless by Jack Campbell
4.0

Better than I expected. Found myself without a "next book to read" while traveling. Picked this one up in the airport book store, hoping for a easy, trashy read. What I got was straight-up, no frills military SF and good space opera in the Hornblower tradition. Dauntless is the story of a hundreds year war between the Alliance and the Syndics. Two human space faring civilizations. The Alliance is democratic, the Syndics are dictatorships sprung from corporate colonies. (Corporations are at best amoral, and at worst immoral.) They've been stalemated for a long time, throwing resources and people at each other. John Geary, long thought dead hero of early Alliance battles with the Syndics, is found barely surviving in a escape pod in a back water part of Syndic space. Dealing with the Rip Van Winkle effects of having awakened after 100 years of suspended animation, Geary is also confronted with being the ranking fleet officer after the Syndic murder all the Alliance fleet high command during a supposed truce negotiation. Curse you Syndic! Fleet command is forced on Geary. Or, shall we say, he assumes fleet command to fill the vacuum of leadership personnel loss. He has to get the surrounded Alliance fleet away from the Syndic and earn the respect of his fleet personnel, who view him as legendary ghost. Kinda of like George Washington coming back to life and taking command of the US Army today. Oh yes! There's a hint of aliens lurking in the background, just to add some tension and zest. As I said, better than expected. I already have book #2 in the too-read pile and will strive to work thru the series(s). Good job Jack Campbell.
