This collection brings together seven short stories and a poem by authors from South Sudan, the world's youngest sovereign nation. This is a solid collection which brings together a variety of perspectives and experiences (albeit disappointingly, all men's) about life in a vibrant and complex, but war-torn and desperately poor, country. I particularly enjoyed Victor Lugala's "Port Sudan Journal", Nyuol Lueth Tong's "The Bastard" and John Oryem's "Potato Thief." There is a Country is slim, but a good whet for the appetite, and I'd gladly read more South Sudanese literature in the future.
