American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis
2.0

There was just no PLOT. Nothing HAPPENED. I understand that that's the point, but it makes the whole experience of having read American Psycho feel... hollow. I don't feel like I've gained anything for having read it. I realize that that is also the point, but that recognition doesn't magically make it all feel worthwhile.

It was a chore to get through - particularly the front half, which consists of Patrick Bateman's everyday only lightly sprinkled with indirect hints at his darker side. The balance VERY gradually shifts over the course of the novel till, towards the end, it is composed of about 50% witty business banter and 50% depraved rape, torture, murder, and general psychosis.

The whole paragraphs spent describing who was wearing what, while novel at first, became tedious very quickly. Similarly, I found myself skipping the entire chapters spend reviewing the work of 80's pop bands.

Still, it had its moments. There were even a few times when the absurdity of the dialogue was legitimately funny. But on the whole this was no where near enough to make up for the effort I had to exert to simply complete the novel.
