I feel like this book is perfect for older kids who would rather play video games than read. The chapters are short, sweet and to the point; Turner takes her source material (which even she admits at times is sparse and hard to come by) and vividly turns it into a tale of violence and backstabbing. I found the writing accessible while exposing children to a side of Japanese history and culture they may not have previously learned about in school. I think it would also facilitate a lot of interesting discussions on the nature of heroism, loyalty and honor. Despite all the dying, though, the book doesn't go into the very gory details of some of the deaths. The chapter artwork is gorgeous and evocative.
