Three Stations
by Martin Cruz Smith
Martin Cruz Smith (MCS) is a great writer who I'm sure would have been successful at any genre. While Renko, his Moscow-based protagonist, is something of a stereotype fictional detective in many respects (loner, estranged from wife/family, failed in love, at odds with the system, misfit at work), MCS has a way of making his characters interesting, credible and entertaining. Many authors have tried something similar; MCS nails it with Renko. Again, I think it's because he's an incredibly gifted writer - something that can't be said of many crime fiction writers. Renko novels aren't that numerous so when one comes out it's always a treat. If you've been to Moscow you'll really appreciate how well he's captured the seedy atmosphere surrounding Komsomolskaya Square (aka Three Stations). And if you haven't you'll still enjoy it!
