Surviving Amber Springs by Siobhan Davis
5.0

When I finish a book by Siobhan Davis I feel exhausted because she has taken me on an emotional roller coaster ride. She has turned me inside out, upside down and sideways with all the plot twists and emotions provoked by the story. This is my first reverse harem book and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The love between Blaire, Axel, Heath and Skeet actually made a lot of sense to me. They really made a coherent group and the loving attention they cast at Blaire was so necessary for her emotional health.

Blaire comes from a very violent past, with an unspeakable loss. The events were so dire that she and her parents had to move from their hometown in Arizona and start a new life in Maryland. The problem is that her parents are having a hard time finding jobs, are constantly fighting, and money is very tight. Blaire seems to be a magnet for trouble. She enrolls for the senior year in in the local high school and since she’s so beautiful, attracts the boys and repels the girls. Since she forms a rapport fast with the three guys, she makes an enemy of Cassie who believes one of the guys, Heath, belongs with her.

Blaire really has a hard time during this book. Apart from suffering a huge loss and her parents fighting, her father taking to drink, Cassie’s attacks, there are also menacing emails. Not surprisingly, she’s battling depression. On the other hand, in her dealings with her boyfriends, she finds love, acceptance and support. I really liked the three guys: Heath is the football All American guy, Axel is the reformed bad guy with juvie record, and Skeet is the well dressed, sweet and charming one. They all really complement each other and make for a great group or should I say, manly harem? My only concern is how a woman can withstand the sexual demands of three YA, given they’re so active (read horny) at that age. Boggles the mind!

Initially she appears as a victim but as the book develops and she goes through a veritable struggle to find her truth and her salvation, she finds redemption and forgiveness. The author’s writing style is very dramatic, so we get very strong emotional scenes, some very violent. The book is so compelling that you don't want to stop reading for a minute, anxious to find out what happens next. As per Ms. Davis style, when we think we’re on the home stretch and resolving issues, she comes up with yet another plot twist and changes course. The fun never ends!
